I had yoiur standard array of College classes embodied by the most recently created Computer Science degre. However, I also gained alot and even more education from my work in Academic computing.
When they hired me I overlapped the Senior I was replacing by 6 months. The job was primarily to maintain 9 disk packs on an IBM 360 mainframe, using a 300-400 page report generated by IBGENR. Boring!!! I quickly passed the report from IBGENR to COBOL then to SAS then to Pascal and finally to IBGENR. This turned the report into a 50 page report on that old feed paper.
Wow, we got a new XEROX printer that was the size of a stove. I quickly figured out printer codes and passed my IBGENR report using OS/JCL and outputed the report on the Xerox laser printer and it was only 25 pages now and easier to read.
Next we installed the new Interact 8.0 which utilized REXX/STINT interface, that used memory blocks and was compatible with Fortran. I Passed the pre-output to my terminal and assigned hot keys and now generated my letters to staff about files out there.
My supervisors liked taking credit and I enjoyed new challenges, so this was a match in heaven. I ended up doing a lot of their work, teaching adult courses (sub at first), installing OS's, and Security Checks.
There I saw the f1st Amiga (pre MAC and of shoot from 64) that used the latest tech for video imaging (VGA and EVGA). Those colors were spectacular and I spent days and weeks toying with it. A co-worker nad I hacked Lotus 123 and found a password "ROSEBUD", my 1st hack. Operators (Mainframe) like time off and I got to work their shifts (nounting tapes, loading cards, approving requests, and verifying). The computer interface room had extension cards large as the monitor I am using now, and big transistors. Everything so big and so easy to see, you just a learning bonanza.
